On the 22-25 May 2016 the Italian team for the project “New European Citizens– lights and shadows of the European Union’s future through the eyes of the present and future young citizens” was in Albania, in Durazzo and in Tirana, for the second international meeting. During the meeting we discussed about Euroscepticism and the future of the European Union. Meetings have been organized by the University “Marin Barleti”; the guests speakers were some ambassadors and some international, and national, organizations representatives. After each meeting there was a discussion between participants.
Welcome speech has been done by the Rector of Marin Barleti University of Tirana: Dr. Marenglen Spiro. Dr. Dorian Jano and Marcello Cavalcaselle (Italian embassy in Tirana representative) were the guests speakers of Monday, 23 May. After them there was a discussion about immigrants and refugees crisis, with Edlira Baka (UNHCR representative in Albania), Silvia Josepfina Martìn Cortés (Spanish ambassador in Tirana), and Dewi van de Weerd (Netherland ambassador in Tirana and representative of EU Council presidency).
After a break, meetings were about solidarity in Europe. The guest speaker was the deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Albania; she spoke about Euroscepticism and its impact on the candidate counties of the Western Balcans.
On Tuesday, 24 May meetings started with Klodiana Beshku’s speech (professor of political science at the University of Tirana) about youth education. Meeting continued with the presentation of Lucia Cucciarelli (Italian embassy in Tirana representative) about youth twinning programs between Italian and Albanian youngsters.
After that, the delegations of the countries attending the project, showed their presentation about Euro-skepticism in their countries, whereupon there were animated and interesting debates between young participants.
Next meeting will be in Romania, in Bucharest, and it will be a training meeting aimed at fostering their competences and skills as peer facilitators in order to become themselves promoters of democratic engagement and spread awareness among their peers. It will be held in October 2016.
